Beth Sholom Congregation
62nd Annual Banquet

Oren Charnoff

Oren Charnoff is a senior at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy. Oren’s family have been members of Beth Sholom for Oren’s entire life. He started attending youth programs in the old building on Seven Locks road. One of Oren’s fondest memories of the Shabbat morning “Kadimah” program was the year it was held in the temporary trailers used during construction of Beth Sholom.

Oren participated weekly in Kadimah from ages 4 to 7. When he was 8, there was no official leader for Kadimah. Oren decided they should continue to meet and he started leading Kadimah at age 8. He continued leading the “Kadimah kids,” or other Shabbat morning groups, for the next nine years, until 2008, when he finally “retired.” As group leader, Oren taught dozens of children to daven and to love stories and games about the parasha and holidays.

This year, Oren has turned his focus to working with Justin Dekelbaum and Mikey Beckerman to reinvigorate the “Teen Minyan.” Oren, Justin and Mikey have made the bi-weekly Teen Minyan a huge success. Oren has also served as President of the Youth Board and has worked with other teen leaders, Rabbi Rackover and current Youth Director Darren Schneider to restructure Shabbat morning groups.

Oren’s connection to Beth Sholom is strong and has helped shape who he is today. He is exceptionally proud of the generation of Beth Sholom youth who passed through his Shabbat morning groups.
